Alt Chat Wednesday: Celebrating The Little Things

We seldom chat about celebrating our successes or those of our fellow community members. So this week we’re taking a break from the hustle to celebrate the little things. The community we’re building along our journey. The steps along our path that lead to seeing our dreams become reality. The people who support us day in and day out. The milestones we may have reached on our blog or on social media while we weren’t watching.

Come hang out with us on Twitter this Tax Day (Wednesday, April 15th) at 9AM PDT / 12PM EDT as we celebrate the little things in our lives and talk about ways we can be more mindful of our journey and of those who support us along the way. One participant will win Lindor Truffles from Lindt Chocolate to celebrate the successes in their life.

Alt Summit Winter 2015 Mini-Party Submissions

By: Kelly Smith; Photo by: Kelly Smith for Alt Summit

We are so impressed with the response to the mini party host contest. Each of you are knocking it out of the ballpark with your original ideas and attention to detail. If you are still thinking about making your submission, then check out these recaps from last January's mini party hosts

The Secret Garden was a huge hit and a breath of fresh air in the middle of a cold January.

Urban Jungle was styled perfectly with a neon sign (that they gave away in a genius contest!).

I Wish I May I Wish I Might filled the room with golden inspiration.

Glimmer Shimmer Shake danced the night away.

Carnival swept everyone away into a different world and spoiled guests with takeaways.

You have a few hours left to summit your ideas! So go read this, form a team, and make your party dreams come to life with the help of Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft at the 2015 Alt Summit Winter conference.

Update: The contest has closed.

Being a Guest Blogger for Your Favorite Brand

By: The Honest Company Top Photo by Brooke Dennis for Alt Summit

At The Honest Company, we get numerous inquiries about guest blogging for Honestly. We really appreciate working with contributors that stand out from the crowd because it keeps content fresh and allows us to build relationships with bloggers. So, how do you write for a business? Based on our experience, here are five steps you can take on the successful road to being a guest blogger for your favorite brand.

Do your research.  While customers and fans make the best brand ambassadors, knowing the company’s products is only part of the equation. Before crafting your pitch, familiarize yourself with the company’s mission and voice. Subscribe to its blog or actively read posts for a few days to get a feel for the variety and style of content published. Then, craft your pitch with this in mind.

At The Honest Company, we look for guest contributions that align with our goals of providing readers with useable information regarding healthy, natural, and stylish living — and showcases the blogger’s talents. It’s especially impressive when a blogger boldly suggests an idea she thinks is missing in our editorial lineup that would round out the reader experience.

Find the right person to pitch. Visit the company’s blog, look for the “Contact Us” page, and reach out to the e-mail address provided there. If the company doesn’t provide a blog-specific contact, look for the e-mail address of the in-house PR manager. Finally, if those roads lead to nowhere, reach out via the brand’s general media inquiries channel. Your pitch will find its way into the right hands.

Before hitting send, make sure your e-mail also introduces your blog and social media channels, includes links to a few sample posts (provide one that is similar in scope to your pitch), and a media kit.  And don’t forget to personalize it! Content managers receive numerous inquiries each day, so this is an easy way to stand out from the crowd of boilerplate messages.

When you get a “yes.” They love your idea. Now what do you do? If the company doesn’t automatically share this information with you, send a follow-up note asking about:

  • Editorial and style guidelines
  • Word count
  • Creative asset formatting (e.g., minimum pixel width)
  • Deadline(s)

Armed with this general information, you can focus your attention on what really matters — delivering a polished post that requires little to no editing. It’s really appreciated when a contributor hyperlinks where appropriate throughout her post. For example, if you cite a study or adapt a recipe, link to it so the content manager doesn’t have to search for the source. Provide original photography or artwork to accompany the post. And include any links to your blog and social media channels, so the company can tag you in promotion of your post.

“No” sometimes means “not right now.” At Honest, we finalize our editorial calendar a few months in advance. So, we often have to pass on a pitch because the timing isn’t right. In this case, it never hurts to ask the content manager for insight regarding the upcoming themes slated and pitch a holiday post as early as September.

Celebrate Motherhood in May and Win a Ticket to Alt SLC

By: Melanie Blodgett

Remember the riveting presentation from the women behind Every Mother Counts at Alt in January? We hope you're still feeling inspired to join the cause and we're delighted to partner with EMC in May to celebrate Motherhood Around the World. To help us celebrate, we're asking you to take two minutes to do something to promote motherhood. That's less time than it takes to check your Facebook feed and it will be a lot more satisfying. If you're in need of some ideas, here's a list right here to get the wheels turning.

If you'd like to support EMC even more, help spread the word by letting us know about the day you were made a mother. Maybe it was the day you birthed your first born, a day you made a difference in a child's life, or the day you were asked to be a godparent - we want to hear about it! In 200 words, simply share your experience and you will have the opportunity to win a ticket to Alt Summit Summer or Alt Summit Winter in Salt Lake City. Simply:

1. Post your mother themed story in May

2. Add the phrase #Alt Summit believes every mother counts at the top or bottom of your post

3. Send a link to your post to erin@altitudesummit.com

One winner will be randomly chosen each Friday from the entries. That winner can choose a ticket to Alt Summit in June 2014 or January 2015. Yay for moms!

Winners have been notified via email.
