Business Cards: Make vs. Buy

If you have never been to Alt before, you might be surprised to find out that business cards are kind of a big deal! I mean, think about it, this is your one opportunity to meet and mingle with brands, businesses, and other bloggers. What they leave with is a card that will hopefully spark a memory of who you are and what your conversation was like.

One thing that comes up every conference is whether to make or buy business cards, so we thought it would be fun to help you break it down with a pro/con list:

Pro of making

  • Represent a specific skill - If you make banners or plan parties, then a business card that represents just that can be a ticket to success! We love this little party in a box from Confetti Sunshine.
  • Showcase how clever or inventive you are - We love these sea salt cards from Lulu the Baker.
  • (Potentially) less expensive than having cards designed and printed.
  • Double as a little gift from you to your favorite people!

Con of making

  • Time consuming and stressful, especially if you are running out of time!
  • (Potentially) expensive - depending on what you are making.
  • People don't have the space to bring everything home.
  • Some experts suggest that all business cards be scannable.
  • Hard to carry and travel with.

Pro of buying

  • Less stressful! Once they are designed and ordered, you are done!
  • Easy to travel and cary around the conference
  • Professional look.
  • Potential to be purchased in bulk and used for years.
  • Can easily match your brand aesthetic.

Cons of buying

  • Can be expensive, especially if you want letter press.
  • Blend in with the crowd.
  • Need to plan and order ahead of time.

Whatever you decide, just make sure that they have all the information you want displayed in a clear way, have enough to pass around to everyone you meet (100-300), and represent your brand accurately.
